Once a gate house and cowshed to the main homestead of Ashok Vatika, it has been restored and extended to the edge of the flat land where it sat, to make the Cliff House! It opens on a large picture window to the Himalayas – from green, to brown under blue or scarlet skies. Its common salon is arrived at by a wide, descending stair and has the feel of walking into the pages of a design magazine. In whites, greys and indigoes, it holds out the exteriors on display on three open sides. Two independent rooms, connected by a verandah, honour two of India’s leading abstract painters: The Ram Kumar Suite is in blues and whites. This cottage in Nainital features a double bed along with a reading chair and a study table for the inspired.
